Cinnabar Lacquer pieces are renowned for their vivid red hue and intricate carvings, with origins dating back around 2,300 years. The finest examples are typically from the 18th and 19th centuries, specifically the mid- to late-Qing dynasty period, although occasional pieces from the 17th century surface in auctions. These pieces achieve their distinctive color by incorporating cinnabar, a natural mercury ore, into the lacquer, which is derived from a Sumac tree native to China.
